If you’re like me, you consider your pets full-fledged members of your family. As a pet lover, my dog has the freedom of the house.

But just like other members of my family he drives me crazy from time to time with his constant shedding of hair and dander. After years of tolerating pet hair from Buddy, my 8 year old Lab, I decided to do some research and invest in the best quality vacuum cleaner designed specifically with pet owners in mind. After a few weeks of nightly research reading reviews and learning way more than I care to admit about pet vacuum cleaners, I narrowed my choices down to 3 models. No longer will you have to spend more time than you need cleaning your carpets, hard floors and upholstery to keep them free from fur, debris and other sheddings. I’m going to share with you the best pet vacuum cleaners on the market for picking up both dog and cat hair. The DC65 Animal Complete is made by Dyson, which if you’ve never heard of them, is considered by many to be the Mercedes-Benz of vacuum cleaners. , this is the best upright vacuum for pet hair and is also the most expensive of the 3, but you only get what you pay for.

It’s pretty robust and heavy duty. Packed with features, this vacuum cleaner in so innovative, it looks like it’s from the future. Unlike most upright HEPA vacuums that come with bulky bases that are a hassle to get around tights corners, the Dyson DC65 Animal Complete has an innovative “Ball” as the base. This allows the cleaner to take tight turns without a problem. Dyson claims that this model of upright vacuum cleaner has a more powerful suction than any other vacuum. 25% more power in tests to be exact. Although that claim may be questionable, the videos of this machine sucking up pet hair and grime clearly demonstrate its power. More suction also means it can be used to quickly eliminate dust and dirt from your home. The Dyson Animal Complete also unleashes a redesigned brush bar. This simply means that the product’s bristles have been optimized to do an even better job penetrating carpet fibers. This makes the product move deeply into your carpets to easily remove pesky pet hairs and other contaminants.

For those of you with hard wood floors, laminate or tile, the Animal Complete will give just about any other vacuum cleaner a run for its money. The DC65 Animal Complete comes with a Tangle-free Turbine tool which allows handheld use and does not get tangled with long hair. Counter-rotating heads with brushes pickup and remove dirt, sand and hair from upholstery or car. For even more protection against pet hairs, I recommend the Dyson Groom Tool attachment which is great for dogs with long or medium hair. It attaches to the vacuum and removes loose, excessive and extreme embedded dog hair before it’s shed around your home. It also captures harmful allergens during grooming and removes dead skin cells improving the dog’s coat. It’s not cheap rubbish! This is a terrific vacuum that’s designed explicitly with pet owners in mind. Like other Dyson uprights, there are never any disposable bags or filters that you have to constantly clean and replace. Over time, the savings from not having to buy filters and bags will more than likely catch up with the extra up-front cost of investing $500+ in the DC65 Animal Complete making it a pretty attractive value in the long run.

● Works great on carpet and hardwood alike. ● No bags or filters to replace. (Pet allergy/asthma friendly and easy clean HEPA filters) ● It comes with an automatic brush adjustment that makes it easier to use ● Dyson created this vacuum specifically with multiple pet owners in mind so it’s up to the job of getting rid of stubborn pet hairs, fur and dander which cause allergies. ● Spending $500+ for a vacuum cleaner is out of the question for a lot of people, but it is worth the price. My dog is both lovable and cute but he also sheds – a lot. Buddy’s fur is light and wispy and many of the top pet vacuum cleaners I’ve tried don’t have the suction necessary to carry it away quickly. Usually I find myself having to repeatedly run the machine over the same spot in order to pick it up. Another contender for “best vacuum to get rid of pet hair” is the Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet Rewind Bagless Upright Vacuum (whew, try saying that 3x over).

I actually owned this vacuum for a few years until it finally quit on me a few weeks back prompting me to find a replacement (and inspiring me to write this review). The Hoover T-Series was easy to store since the handle folds down, and unlike many others I’ve had of this type, it didn’t lose the “snap”, and eventually fold even while I’m trying to use it. Like the best Dyson’s, this upright was made specifically for pet owners and even came with a tool made for my pet’s shedding problem. One of the onboard tools is a pet hair turbo brush that’s actually a 12-inch extension wand. Not only did this work on getting the hair off the surface of furniture and upholstery, I could really dive down under cushions or down into crevices to get the fur there as well. Although this is a bagless model, it came with HEPA compliant filters which need to be changed out every few months depending on how often you use it. Price is another plus for this model.

Coming in around $160, this mid priced vacuum was very affordable. The only downside for me is the height of this vacuum even with the handle down for storage. It’s lightweight enough that while using it I’m not even aware of how bulky this vacuum cleaner is, but overall, it’s pretty large measuring 16 x 12 x 32.5 inches and weighing 23 pounds. The only place my family has for it is hidden in a closet near our attic, which is less than ideal. Other than that, I loved the suction it had, and the brush roll shut off petal made it easy for me to move between carpeted areas to hard floors. Finally, there’s the Shark Navigator, another upright vacuum cleaner model. Labs love to find small spaces behind the couch or under the stairs. The Shark Navigator looked agile enough to be able to glide between the couch and the wall with it’s featured swivel steering. It also looked lightweight enough that moving under the stairs didn’t send me to the ER with back pain.

That alone was a great selling point for my family. Another selling point was its ability to perform on carpet and the wooden floor of our kitchen. While other vacuums have promised the ability to work on both surfaces, either the great suction didn’t hold out, or the attachments were not appropriate. The Shark Navigator does have a Dust-Away Bare Floor Attachment with two microfiber pads. Videos on YouTube made them look easy to attach and they seemed to work with no suction problem. There’s also a pet hair turbo brush that comes with it designed specifically to pick up your pet’s hair and dander. with a massive 61% saving on the $450 price tag. The hose that attaches to the wand could be a little bit longer. For many people it might not be a problem, but at my height, I’d have to climb onto the couch at the midway point in order to reach the floor behind it. I also wish there was a place on the Shark Navigator Lift Away Pro to store the pet brush when it’s not being used.
