Just south of Chicago Rockford International Airport, at 6901 Kishwaukee Road, are a beautiful mansion, farm, woods and gardens. The Indian Hill Manor and Farm, which now encompasses about 300 acres, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.Chances are you’ve never seen it, or if you have, you’re one of the few people to have been introduced to a little bit of bliss a stone’s throw away from the airport’s landing lights.

In fact, until about three years ago you couldn’t even see this property and home from the road, because it was surrounded by dense shrubbery that obscured the view.That’s changed now because the brush has been thinned by volunteers who are making the property more accessible to the wider community. First, though, a bit of history, courtesy of “The History of Indian Hill Manor and Farm,” published by the Smeja Family Foundation.In 1916, Chicago paint manufacturer Charles Barrett and his wife, Esta Reed Barrett, an actress who appeared on Broadway, bought the property known as Indian Hill Manor. bissell vacuum and cleanerThey commissioned Rockford architect Charles W. During construction, many modern conveniences we take for granted were just being invented, and electricity was becoming available beyond central cities. So the house has a central vacuum cleaning system, electric stove and electric intercom system.Since 2001, the magnificent home has been owned by the Smeja Family Foundation, the children of William and Lucile Smeja. William Smeja was a successful real estate developer in Elmhurst who bought Indian Hills Manor in 1971.In 2010, the foundation purchased the farm, which includes an early 1900s dairy barn that is one of the early examples of a “sanitary” barn, with concrete floors, cork board stalls, extra ventilation and a system to remove manure. The foundation has spent more than $100,000 to restore that and other barns on the farm.The manor’s gardens were designed by famous landscape architect O.C. Simonds, a founder of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Simonds designed many Chicagoland golf courses and was superintendent of Chicago’s Graceland Cemetery.I’m writing about this now because Indian Hill is about to share its wonders with the wider community.“

We’re coming out this summer to the public. We’ve been operating under the radar until now,” said Jerry Paulson, who plans activities at Indian Hill for the foundation.“We’re doing lectures, tours and other events introducing this to the public, promoting historic preservation, architecture, land conservation, archaeology, agriculture and teaching the history of the Kishwaukee area,” said Paulson, who is retired after many years as director of the Natural Land Institute.Education projects have been underway for several years, Paulson explained.“When (the foundation) acquired the farm, they established a relationship with Stillman Valley High School’s horticulture program, and the school’s Future Farmers of America students do class projects at the farm. Twice a year they do weeklong projects, helping to restore grounds and farm buildings,” Paulson said.“In addition, the foundation has leased some farmland to the FFA, and they get the proceeds from those acres as part of their ag programs.”
