It has a sliding mechanism to get the bin off to empty it but it sticks and it hard to get off. They call it the one touch but it's more like why doesn't this thing come off?! With the B&D you just open the door. The only thing we really like about this is you can grab it and vac, sort of like point and shoot.-----------------------------------Vacs come in a variety of designs; which one is better really depends on personal preference.
Here is a comparison between the Dyson DC58 and the Black and Decker Platinum. I've also included a simple video.BatteryBD Lithium Ion 20vDyson nickel manganese cobalt 21.6vWeightBD 3lbs 12 ozDyson 2lbs 13 ozChargerBD flat stand that holds accessories. vacuum cleaner suction capacityJust place the vac on the stand to charge;Dyson: plugin adapter; nilfisk vacuum cleaners serviceno accessory standDirt CanisterBD main body is the canister; rainbow vacuum cleaner e series partsdoor is clear to see contents; access simply by pulling the handle to the door and pouring out the contents. Door opens to side.Dyson: clear cylinder shaped canister; easy to see how full it is; but to empty you have to slide the release which is in an ackward position that is hard to reach and get hold of.
It takes two hands just to release the door. ErgonomicsBD the handle is centered over the top of the vac; weight is well balanced; vac is roundDyson: Handle is at the backend of the vac like holding a pistol; weight is all sticking straight out; overall look is squareBoth have their advantages: BD feels more comfortable long use, Dyson can reach into places better.AttachmentsBoth come with straight nozzle and furniture brush. But the BD comes with a hose. A hose and attachment accessory kit is available for the Dyson at about $80.PowerThe Dyson has two power levels which you switch using a push button on the back of the vac accessible with your thumb. The lower power works fairly well but true comparison with the DB is the max level. Here they are fairly equal.I don't know how they tested the suction of the Dyson to be 3 times greater than any other brand. My video shows both in action. The Dyson was set on Max, the BD has only one setting. They both did as good a job in my opinion. But with the Dyson on max power the running time is cut to a third according to their own feature list.
I vacuumed out my car and it took all of the battery in less then 10 minutes even with a low setting for a couple minutes. With the BD there is battery to spare. But the Dyson did a decent job without max setting.NoiseNeither is horribly loud; according to the free (but hardly accurate) decibel meter on my iPhone both register about 95; literally they are about equal except the Dyson is a higher pitch. These vacs are fairly similar in comparison; the choice is more personal preference. I prefer the BD for it's balanced weight and more conservative look. I also like that the nozzle is at the end of a detachable hose (included). The Dyson's straight on design makes it easier to get into places and you don't have to bend over quite as much. The BD lists for less then $150 but includes the hose. The Dyson lists for less then $250 but the hose kit is about another $80.Increased battery life via reduced motor setting is a major advance over previous models, longevity remains to be provenWhat's this?
