Supporters and staff at North Walsham's New Road car wash . A thriving north Norfolk business has been ordered to close, with the loss of six jobs, because of complaints about a noisy vacuum cleaner. North Norfolk District Council planners have given the hand car wash, on North Walsham’s New Road, three months to shut.Supporters of the business have condemned the move as an attack on livelihoods and enterprise and claim the council has been swayed by complaints from only one or two nearby residents.Carl Purkiss, who is joint landlord of the car-wash site, said they believed they had met conditions imposed by the council in November 2013 when the car wash was allowed to continue operating for a trial period of 18 months following complaints.They had restricted the car wash’s hours including closing on Sundays, moved containers and a canopy further away from people’s homes, and tackled drainage concerns.But the council’s environmental health department says it received a “significant number of complaints of nuisance” over the trial period and an investigation had shown that nearby residents were “detrimentally affected by intrusive levels of noise, on a regular basis.”

Mike Hicks, who owns the whole New Road site, said he was “extremely unhappy” at the closure move.“They do a remarkably good job there and I think it’s a smack in the face for enterprise,” he added.Linda Mean, whose home is closest to the car wash, said she had no objections to the noise. “People drop their cars off to be done and walk into town where they spend money in other businesses,” she said.Regular customer Alan Watkins, of Sampson Road, North Walsham, said he was registered disabled and could not clean his car.“They are great lads,” he said.
