When you squeeze the blue part, the valve between the grit holding chamber and the blue bulb closes so it pushes water out some exit ports around the blue/green seam. When you release it, the valve opens and as the water is sucked into the blue area, it sucks it through the yellow part, trapping debris in a small screen before the water passes on into the blue bulb. The more you squeeze it and the slower you release it, the longer you can "vacuum" along the bottom - usually only a second or two. I'll try to post some pics and a video to show you.
