OSHA estimates that 30,000 U.S. facilities are at risk for a major combustible dust explosion – across all industries. So, the threat of an industrial explosion in your facility is very real. But there are steps you can take right now to protect your people and your facility from combustible dust. If you can eliminate the dust, you can eliminate the explosion hazard. That’s why OSHA recommends – and in some cases requires – manufacturers to use certified explosion-proof vacuums as part of a regular plant maintenance program when collecting hazardous classed dust.Check out our Combustible Dust Webinar held in conjunction with Occupational Health & Safety magazine! What you need to know about explosion-proof and dust ignition proof vacuums True explosion-proof/dust ignition-proof vacuums should be engineered from the ground up to prevent combustible dust explosions and certified by an NRTL. All parts should be grounded and built from non-sparking materials – from the outer shell to the switches, motor, filters, and accessories.
Manufacturers should be careful of vacuums that are promoted as explosion-proof, but are really only standard models with a few antistatic options added on. OSHA does NOT certify or approve any vacuum cleaner. Only Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL), such as the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), has the authority to certify vacuum cleaners as explosion-proof or dust ignition-proof. When electricity is unavailable or undesirable, safe pneumatic vacuums are excellent alternatives to electric explosion-proof vacuums. All pneumatic vacuums are not explosion-proof vacuums. Safe pneumatic vacuums should be constructed of non-sparking materials with ignition-proof parts that meet the highest level of operational safety.Protect yourself from combustible dust with field-proven explosion-proof vacuums As a leader in industrial dust collection for over 20 years, Nilfisk is leading the industry in manufacturing the safest explosion-proof vacuums and dust-ignition proof vacuums available.
