It’s an appalling one. I was deeply disturbed by the Kirby sales demonstration I had in my home. A friend had given my name to an agent thinking I might be an interested buyer in their vacuum cleaning system. I got a call from the company the next day, and that evening (Tuesday evening) a man and his wife arrived to show me the wonderful work of this vacuum system. I had agreed to them coming to my house in the evening thinking it would be a quick 20 minute sales pitch. The man kindly cleaned a carpet for me, then another one, and then finally showed me how much dust comes out of a mattress. From the carpets he extracted inches of filth. But the dirt in my house is not the point I want to make. The poor sales guy who took forever to tell me about his great product finished up at my house an hour after he arrived, at about 7pm and then made his way to his last appointment of the day in Meyersdal at 8pm. He’d been on the road since 6am. For this he wasn’t earning a cent.

If I buy a vacuum cleaner he would earn commission. But at R20 000 a unit, I won’t be buying one. The sales guy has been working for the company for a couple of weeks and by Tuesday night hadn’t yet sold a vacuum cleaner. But for each contact I give him, he’ll earn R5. And if I give him 10 names, he’ll get R15 from Kirby for petrol money. The man and his wife have 3 children. And clearly no money.
