LG stunt ad sees climber scale a skyscraper using the suction of two vacuum cleaners Yes, you read that right – in the new ad for the LG CordZero vacuum, rock climber Sierra Blair-Coyle journeys up the side of a skyscraper aided by the machines’ suction power. Earlier this month, I wrote about Toyota installing a climbing wall in New York as part of a recent ad campaign. And now LG has produced its own piece of extreme climbing-based advertising – this time to show off the super suction power of its CordZero vacuum. Is this the beginning of a weird ad trend? The film shows Sierra Blair-Coyle scale the 460 feet-high building, which is found in the Songdo International Business District in Seoul, armed with only two CodeZero vacuums strapped to her back (and safety ropes of course – they’re not daft). It is of course totally ridiculous, but as a means of expressing a pretty tedious but essential piece of brand messaging – that the machine has powerful suction – it’s also hard to beat.

iRobot has been busy refining the Roomba and Dyson came up with their own take on it with the DC06. Now, LG's enters the robotic vacuum cleaner fray with the new Roboking that promises intelligent cleaning using a range of advanced sensors. Whether or not it's any good remains to be seen. A combination of ultrasonic and infrared helps minimize collisions and helps to optimise performance by planning the most efficient route. Supposedly more effective than bumpers or light sensors, these tools allow LG to claim a more advanced cleaning model than any previous robot vacuum cleaner. Of course, as usual with LG, we're bombarded with wild claims that appear to have little substance behind them. As you can see it's not the prettiest of devices. Having said that, neither the Dyson DC06 or Roomba will win any beauty prizes either, the prettiest is the Electrolux Trilobite, but that is just a tad more expensive than a Roomba. Its 120W digital BLDC mounted motor makes it allegedly the world's most powerful robot cleaner and in addition is efficient enough to last up to 10 times longer than regular motors "“ around 2000 hours of use. At the end of a cleaning run it will return to the docking station automatically to recharge the long-life Li-PB battery, which offers faster charge times and a longer life than Ni-MH models, and to improve its performance when active, side rotating brushes and a separate pick-up brush efficiently cleans up dirt while a delicate floor cloth is available to mop up spills.

Despite the hype behind these robotic cleaners they actually don't perform too well on test and, that's not just our opinion. They are good for light cleaning duties in between real cleaning, basically they keep the dust off the floor, but they won't replace the Sebo anytime soon. LG has demonstrated its Roboking at IFA 2009, though there's no news on pricing or availability as yet. Don't expect it to be cheap or widely available. It's 180-degree swivel head gives the vacuum a fair amount of maneuverability, allowing you to turn on a dime (which you may literally have to do from time to time) and around corners without much struggle.The roller itself performs well on bare surfaces though it will take a little more effort to push it around on carpeted areas.One thing we noticed in our extensive use of the device is that the CordZero Handstick works best when held on an angle.It's quite easy to push the vacuum back and forth when held at a 70-degree angle or below, though bringing it up an almost standing position tends to leave it stuck in place, meaning you'll have to lean the handle back to push it forward again.It's a minor gripe that can be avoided entirely once you've gotten used to using it at the intended angle, but it did feel unpleasant on those occasions where we brought it up too high and got stopped dead in our tracks.In our experience, we found that 40 minutes was more than enough time to complete our vacuum duties, allowing us to use the CordZero Handstick at in power mode for the entire duration of its use.

That's not to say that regular mode is a slouch, either, but then who doesn't want to harness all the suction power that's available to them?LG's latest cordless vacuum is both functional and quite attractive to boot. Its modular, lightweight design allows you to use it as a traditional handstick vacuum or as a hand-held dustbuster-style vacuum with the press of a single button, which is as clever as it is handy.We also appreciate the dual battery PowerPack system that allows us to easily swap out power sources, giving it twice the suction time of its cordless competitors.Though its head can get stuck in place when pulled back too far, and it's a little tougher to push around on carpeted surfaces, its 180-degree swivel design adds a great deal of maneuverability to this vacuum.We also love its tangle-free roller head, which in our tests did not get jammed once.If you're looking for an affordable all-rounder of a vacuum that's free of cords with better than normal battery life, LG's CordZero Handstick is easy to recommend.
