CD changers from major manufacturers such as Philips are not especially complex devices compared to many other common pieces of consumer electronics.

Aside from the disc mechanism itself, most other functions are contained on a limited number of circuit boards. Major repairs require replacing these boards. Most consumers don't have the necessary expertise, and opening the unit typically voids the warranty. However, many common problems can be addressed through simple maintenance and troubleshooting. The Basics If your CD changer is behaving erratically, start with the fundamentals. Swap out your power bar to eliminate that as a potential problem or plug the stereo directly into a wall outlet. If your changer is connected to a receiver, test the audio cable by swapping it for a new replacement or the cable from a working audio source. If the cable's fine, try attaching the changer to a different input on your stereo. If that cures the problem, your receiver has a bad input. If you don't have an input to spare, you can purchase a multi-input switch from your local electronics store to attach multiple devices to one audio-in port. No-Disc Errors Sometimes, your changer will report that there's no disc in the tray or that one of the trays in the changer is empty.

Open the tray and check that all discs have their label sides facing upwards. If only one disc is failing to read, examine it closely for scratches and dirt. Dirty discs can be cleaned by rubbing from the center to the edge -- never following the circle of the disc -- with a soft, lint-free cloth. Scratched discs must usually be replaced, although products that buff the disc and fill scratches can sometimes repair them enough for the CD player's error-correction circuitry to make them playable. Dust and Condensation Over time, dust can build up inside your CD changer and foul the laser lens. You can slow this process by cleaning the outer case regularly, removing dust with a vacuum cleaner, electrostatic duster or moist sanitary wipes. Purchase a CD-shaped lens cleaner, which cleans built-up dust and dirt from the lens and restores its clarity. Condensation is a more subtle problem that prevents discs from reading. In cold weather and humid climates, moisture condenses in fine droplets on the laser lens.

When the room warms up and the moisture evaporates, the CD changer will play again. The Big Stuff Some problems don't lend themselves to home troubleshooting and will require professional repairs. For example if your CD player is unable to read any discs at all, the lens might be out of alignment. This can happen if it's been bumped or jarred, and it requires professional care. If the changer's tray is revolving slowly, and discs take a long time to load and don't play correctly, the unit's power supply might be failing.
vacuum cleaner bagless or notThe disc-changing mechanism and sliding tray are prone to many kinds of mechanical failures, and the internal circuit boards can also fail.
