average battery life before losing the ability to hold a charge was about a year..replacement batteries were close to the purchase price of a new one..so I opted for the new purchase.I stayed with this model because I had replacement filters.The first thing I noticed was that the motor speed was less then the one it replaced.The first model used a sub c style battery pack with 2 batteries wired off the pack and had 15 cells..This new vac also rated at 18 volts uses a smaller battery in a single pack with 14 cells ..16.8 volts actual ...it says 18 volt rated on the pack, but thats not possible.
