More than seven years ago, Rick Bugner's wife, Jennifer O'Leary, was redecorating their kitchen with a 1940s theme and she needed a toaster. Mr. Bugner was assigned to the job.A dutiful husband, he obliged, and eventually found an old, soiled $20 toaster at a flea market. But when he brought it home to his bungalow in Berwyn, he was shocked to see how well it cleaned up. Mr. Bugner, an operations manager for an industrial chrome manufacturer, felt the 1947 Proctor toaster was clearly a work of art.From there, a fascination with vintage appliances and industrial designs was born. Within two years, Mr. Bugner's collection of vintage appliances included more than 1,000 pieces, and he was quickly becoming famous in a burgeoning segment of the art collector industry, with exhibits of his collections attracting national and international attention.Mr. Bugner, 51, who worked for seven years to build a new appreciation for ordinary household items from the 1930s, '40s and '50s, died Sunday in his Berwyn home.

For Mr. Bugner, the collections offered a chance to show people how rich the country's design heritage was, and possibly save some of the treasures from the trash bin.And many of his efforts paid off. Unlike other collectors, he was not possessive about his pieces and often invited friends and artists to his home to view his collection, said Mike Sarna, curator of collections at the Museum of Science and Industry.Mr. Bugner's collection included vacuum cleaners, juicers, wafflemakers, hair dryers, shavers and irons. Many of the pieces were created by designers for major manufacturers, such as Sunbeam and Coleman. As a result, the designers were never given credit for the pieces, so Mr. Bugner spent hours tracking down patent numbers to learn their names. He later interviewed some of the designers to craft a history of his pieces.Mr. Bugner's collection included Raymond Loewy's 1946 low-slung Singer vacuum cleaner, which had a retractable cord and a hinged head that allowed it to hang flat and reach under furniture. He also had the Coleman 1934 Electro-Brew coffee percolator, with a design so graceful it was packaged in a velvet bag.As Mr. Bugner's collection grew, collectors and artists were instantly drawn in, said Jim Bohenstengel, who owns the Galerie St. James auction house in Oak Park.

One of Mr. Bugner's first big breaks came in 1993 when some of his appliances were featured at the National Housewares Show in McCormick Place. The selection committee originally planned to show 12 items but was so impressed it settled on about 80. Many of the same pieces were later exhibited at the International Housewares Show in Frankfurt, Germany.Of all his items, though, Mr. Bugner was most attached to his toasters, which provided the inspiration for his entire collection."I discovered I had what I considered to be a work of art," Mr. Bugner once told the Tribune about his first toaster discovery, the 1947 Proctor with a scalloped base and rounded chrome top. "After I got through admiring it, I threw a couple pieces of bread into it and it made toast. What more could you ask for?"I would have been happy to just have it as a piece of sculpture if it didn't work," he said. "I then realized that there's got to be a lot of beautiful things out there that people are just throwing away."

In addition to his wife, Mr. Bugner is survived by two daughters, Stephanie Bugner and Kristen Hendershott; his mother, Jo Howard; and a brother, Gary.Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Hirsch Funeral Home, 3501 Lincoln Highway, Matteson.
