Britain’s domestic vacuum cleaners will become less powerful under European Union rules designed to cut energy use that come into force next year. New machines will be banned from having motors that exceed 1,600W from September 2014, and they will be limited to 900W from 2017. Currently the average vacuum cleaner on the market has a 1,800W motor, and some use as much as 2,200W of power, The Sunday Times reported. Linda Dykes, a professional cleaner who has appeared on the Channel 4 programme Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners, told the paper: "The more powerful the hoover is, the greater the suction. “People who don't know much about vacuums don't think the wattage is important, but people that know about them do." The new European Commission “ecodesign” regulations will also see vacuum cleaners given a rating from A to G based on their energy efficiency and performance, similar to the labels already found on fridges and washing machines. Sir James Dyson, the British entrepreneur, has lodged a legal challenge against the EU rules, claiming that they discriminate against his company's innovative bagless vacuum cleaners.

The firm has launched a judicial review with the European Court of Justice to challenge the new system. They embrace issues such as noise and will limit performance using unrealistic criteria."
