Ill say generally cheaper bagless vacuums are not designed particularly well and simply replace the bag cavity with a bagless chamber that relies heavily on a very clean filter to work. This means that dirt is simply sucked onto or into a filter which needs constant maintenance. I know most of these are washable to some degree but as dirt finds it's way into the deep cracks of the filter material it just doesn't come out. What this means is that over time you are gradually losing suction but even more importantly you are causing the motor to run hotter and hotter.

The hotter a motor gets the faster it's carbon brushes wear out which really affects the lifespan of the vacuum. Generally you will need to change the filters twice a year on a budget bagless vacuum anyway so the cost saving isn't as great as you initially think. If you contrast this with bagged vacuums which have a brand new filter everytime you change a bag the motor runs much cooler so it will last much longer. This extra lifespan will mean that even though you may pay a little extra for bags on a yearly basis over the lifespan of a vacuum the bagged one will work out cheaper since it will not need to be replaced as early.As a side point a lot of the newer bags simply don't lose suction like the old school paper bags used to so the performance is the same between bagless and bagged vacuums too.
