First plug in the charging station and place it against a wall. The front of the Roomba needs to line up and nestle onto the dock for it to work. It takes about three hours to get a full charge, and upon first run, the Roomba spent about an hour vacuuming my 450-square foot apartment.

Performance and ConclusionsThe Roomba 790 uses iRobot's Dirt Detect Series 2 technology, which utilizes an acoustic sensor to detect small and hard debris, like sand, and an optical sensor to detect large and soft debris, like popcorn. Persistent pass cleaning allows the Roomba to use a repeated back and forth motion on areas it can sense are particularly dirty, just like you would with a traditional vacuum. The cleaning head automatically adjusts to accommodate carpets or hardwood floors and dual HEPA filters can capture dust particles as fine as 0.3 microns. That's a lot of technical jargon; you probably just want to know how well it works. I'm happy to say it functions pretty much the same as the Roomba 780 ($599.99) and the Roomba 770 ($499.99, 4 stars). That's a good thing. Like those devices, the Roomba 790 analyzes the dimensions of a room and determines the optimal cleaning path. Though it may look a bit haphazard, pay close attention and you'll see that it really does manage to cover every available inch of the room, and even does a decent job about corners, which is something the Neato XV-21 Pet & Allergy Automatic Vacuum Cleaner ($429.99, 3.5 stars) had some difficulty with.

As mentioned earlier, the Roomba 790 took about an hour to fully vacuum my small, one-bedroom apartment. And while I tend to keep a pretty clean house, the Roomba was able to pick up lots of dirt, dust, and pet hair that I didn't even know was there. A full sweep of my apartment nearly filled the Roomba's collection bin, but not to the point that I had to change it halfway through. In that case, the Roomba will stop, alert you that it's reached capacity, then resume once you have emptied the bin. One thing to consider: I just moved into a new apartment, and the majority of it is covered in hardwood floors. I put a throw rug down and dirtied it up specifically to test the Roomba's versatility, and it did just as nice a job removing debris from the fabric rug as it did the wood floor next to it. But if you live in a similar setup, with a lot more bare floor than carpeting, you may want something that can scrub your floors instead of vacuuming them. iRobot, for instance, makes the Scooba 390  (3.5 stars), which uses a 4-stage process to clean your floors.

There's also the Mint Automatic Floor Cleaner ($199.99, 3.5 stars), which sweeps and mops your floors. In testing the Roomba 790, I kept asking myself: Is this worth $700? You can get a top-of-the-line, traditional vacuum from Dyson for $599.99, and you can bet it's a heck of a lot more powerful than the 790. But then again, you can't sit back on your couch, reach for the remote, and activate a traditional vacuum the same way you can with the Roomba. So for the ultimate in hands-off cleaning, the Roomba 790 is tops. But that still doesn't make the price any easier to swallow. If you can do without the Wireless Command Center, the Roomba 780 costs $100 less and is basically the same otherwise. For $200 less, the Roomba 770  also uses the same technology and does an equally good job in cleaning, though it lacks the capacitive sensor touchpad on the 780 and 790 and does not work with Virtual Wall Lighthouses. The Neato XV-21 is less expensive than all three 700 series Roombas, though it suffers from dated styling and has difficulty around corners.

The Mint Automatic Floor Cleaner  is a good alternative if you want your floors cleaned instead of just vacuumed, but it requires more work and isn't as exhaustive as the Roomba 790. So is the Roomba 790 worth its extravagant price tag? Here's a test: The next time you vacuum, and you're about to navigate from one room to the next without having the cord come unplugged, ask yourself how much you'd be willing to spend to just sit back on your couch and relax.
