MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2008 & Early... My fans keep spinning like crazy, even when just using the browser with a single tab open they end up at 6200rpm and are noisy. I guess this is because of the dust build-ups since everything else works just fine and it started to get noisy quite recently. Since I am planning to install the new memory modules (2x4GB) tomorrow, would it be of any use if I cleaned the fans from dust since the machine will be open? I am not comfortable with removing the fans themselves (I'm female and a blonde, fullstop). Would blowing from a can of compressed air do any good or would I just make it worse by getting the dust deeper or perhaps end up damaging the fans? I was thinking of cleaning everything I can reach with a clean Q-tip if compressed air won't work.It's a late 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; I have already upgraded the RAM to 2x2GB (was 2x1GB) and changed the HDD from 250GB to 500GB. The serial number ends with 11GK, and I'm running 10.7.3 on it.

Take it outside and use compressed air to blow the fans out. Do not blow to long at a time or it will start blowing liquid gas. Remove the battery before doing this for best results. If you can't make sure it is turned off. Our guides were made for blonds ;-) Some of them BY blonds. Personally, I'm turning blond myself again. It’s practically ready to go right out of the box. First you set up the home base that has two big inductive chargers so you never have to fuss with batteries. Once you plug it in and turn on Botvac it learns where it is and will come back to the base to charge after every use.Neato recommends that you put the charging station along a wall with three feet of clearance on both sides so the bot can easily come back home. I didn’t do that. Instead I put it in a horrible spot — underneath my desk with my chair and the one desk leg as obstacles on both sides. To my surprise, Botvac had absolutely no problem finding its way back home through the narrow obstacle course.

The Botvac also comes with a Neato app for iOS and Android that allows you to control the robot from wherever you are. Say you’re at work and find out you have guests coming over later. Just pull up the app to send your Botvac out for a cleaning. And Turbo mode for extra-powerful suction and brushing in a shorter time period.As far as cleaning power goes, I’ve been really impressed by the Botvac Connected. It sucks up pretty much everything from dog hair and lint to bugs and chunks of dog kibble (sorry, my floors get gross). The D-shaped body makes it easy for the bot to comb along walls and reach dirt in tight corners.Once you set up a schedule you pretty much never have to worry about the robot, except when it’s time to clean out trash bin or filter. Sometimes it does get stuck in odd spots or tries to swallow a sock. When it does it sends an alert for you to come and save it.Having a Botvac Connected in the home feels like a taste of living in the connected home of the future.

It still comes with some hiccups, but if cleanliness is next to godliness, Botvac is ready to turn slobs into Zeus.Neato provided Cult of Mac with a review unit for this article.Think alcohol, which cuts through grease and evaporates safely.  Either alcohol wipes (not baby wipes, which can leave a soapy residue), alcohol swabs (which the Apple guys use, according to the ever-reliable Yahoo Answers), or just dip Q-tips in rubbing alcohol.  Not sure what's in hand sanitizer, but I'd make sure there isn't something that will form a residue.  Hopefully Faisal Khan will mention which brand he uses? :)One of the best solutions I have - is cheaper and easy to go with: soap and cotton. I once read a LG manual, instructing to always use something soft to clean, mainly screens, easy. For the screen I use two pieces of a good (soft and clean) cotton: one wet (water only) and other dry. Clean with the wet one and dry after.For the keyboard and among the keys I use an antibacterial soap with a soft and good smell.

Just take care to not let the soap goes inside the keyboard - apply the soap cautiously. If it's hard to remove the dirt from the keys, I go with a swab, carefully.My experience is mainly with a Macbook Pro and iMac. Notice that there are some places in both of them, where a vacuum cleaner will work better in removing the dust.There are a lot of companies selling soft clothes (microfiber and flannel), specifically for cleaning Apple products. You can look for through the web. I worked at the Genius Bar for many years, and was very happy when we switched to alcohol from spray and rags.

It's much more sanitary and does a much better job on the aluminum. You can use them on pretty much every surface.If you go with something else, be sure not to use any cleaner that might get liquid under the keys. Always use a microfiber cloth to prevent scratches and residue. You need:A small fan brushmicrofiber clothcleaning product (i prefer using computer cleaners, but you can also use a mixture of vinegar and lemon in a spray bottle or other cleaning products as long as they don't leave any residue)Air on a can with a thin nozzle to get in hard to get places (can replace the fan brush, but I would still use both)Turn the computer off and let it cool down. Grab the fan brush, and swivel it between the keys, you would be surprised over how dirty it gets between there. I like to  turn the laptop upside down while I do this to make sure it all comes out. Also take the brush in-between the "fold" (where the screen meets the keyboard part)If needed, go over with the air-on-a-can, just to make sure you get all the dirt out.
