Data61 scientist Professor Toby Walsh took to a stage in New York in July, in front of 1000 of the world’s leading artificial intelligence experts, to tell everyone to calm down.The singularity – a hypothetical but much-vaunted circumstance where computer systems get so smart that they program themselves into super-intelligent, seemingly sentient beings able to outsmart humans – is still a long, long way off according to Walsh, and in fact may never materialise.Walsh was speaking at the 25th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. It also raises the spectre of the trolley car ethics problem: would an autonomous car steer its owner to certain death by crashing into a fallen tree or veer left to save its owner but injure people at a pavement cafe?

Dr Kate Darling, a leading specialist in robot ethics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studies the psychology of how humans interact with robots and believes it’s important to consider such issues. On a recent visit to Australia she noted: “Robotics is really important right now. Robots are moving from behind the scenes in factories in cages and to new areas of the world, to transportation systems and hospitals and households, and starting to interact with people in a way we haven’t seen before.“There are a lot of uses that concern me and other people working in robot ethics.
