But if you slack off on regular vacuum cleaner maintenance while continuing to use the machine, you may end up with poor performance. To make sure you are getting all the suction you can out of a Eureka vacuum cleaner, you'll need to clean a few of the components of your machine. Check bags or bin. If dirt is above the fill line on a vacuum cleaner, it will not have as much suction as it should. Try changing the bag, or emptying the dirt bin to improve suction. Eureka bags for a bagged vacuum cleaner have a printed fill line, and the bag should be changed when dirt and debris get to that line. Bagless models need to be emptied when the dust cup is two-thirds full. It's possible to have a blockage in the vacuum cleaner that prevents air and dirt from being sucked up. With the vacuum cleaner unplugged, remove the flexible hose from the bottom base of the vacuum cleaner.

Using your fingers, pull any debris out of the opening of the hose. Another common point for blockage is the end of the hose that goes into the top back of a Eureka machine. Make sure the vacuum cleaner is unplugged. The hose can be unscrewed from the back of the machine as you check for a blockage. Flex the hose to loosen any debris. Pull or dump it out of the hose. There is a dust cup filter that is washable. To retrieve it, flip the dust cup lever to remove the dust cup filter, the filter tube and screen. All of these can be gently washed and dried thoroughly before being replaced in the vacuum cleaner. The HEPA exhaust filters on Eureka vacuums are beneath the dust cup and bin unit. Lift the latch on top of the dust cup unit to lift the entire thing off of the base of the vacuum. Remove the clear filter cover underneath. Lift out and replace the filter every six months. Put it all back together and you are ready to go. Never operate a Eureka vacuum without the filters properly in place.

Clean the brush roll. Look at the top of the base head of the vacuum cleaner. On either side of the head on the brush roll cover are two small screws that will need to be loosened. Gently lift the cover off. You will see the brush roll and the belt. Once the cover is off, carefully use scissors to snip threads and hair that have become wrapped around the brush roll. Replace the cover and tighten the screws back into place. A clean brush roll will help improve suction and cleaning power.
