The Roomba 500 series had about a five-year run where it saw a few minor revisions but ultimately didn’t change that much. It was replaced with the Roomba 600 series about a year ago which brought extremely incremental upgrades too the 500 series, so little in fact that 500 series owners had almost no reason to upgrade as the enhanced performance could barely be noticed. Now, iRobot has released its newest floor-cleaning bot, the high-end Roomba 800 series.

The Roomba 800 series, and its flagship model the Roomba 880, isn’t a replacement for the 600 line. The 800 models are a top-shelf set of vacuum bots, along the line of the Roomba 700 series. This means the robots include important upgrades, like scheduling and auto-docking, as well as less useful ones, like operation via remote control (first released in the 700 series). Yes, you can command your robot vacuum cleaner from the comfort of your couch. The big change with the Roomba 800 series (we’re specifically looking at the Roomba 880, so the article will refer to that from now on) is a completely overhauled cleaning system known as AeroForce. The old beaters are gone, replaced with a fully brushless system that is made up of two counter-rotating debris extractors. These two basically rotate to pull in debris between them as the upgraded vacuum system sucks with five times more force than it previously did. The funneling of the airflow has been completely redesigned compared to the previous models, so that it’s more streamlined and more efficient than before, which means less pressure loss and more power.

If that all sounds rather dull to you, here’s the takeaway: the redesign of the airflow system and the cleaning head module means the Roomba 880 picks up 50% more debris than before.

shark cat robot vacuum cleanerIt picks up more dust, cords and strings have less of a tendency to become knotted around the rotating brushes, and the dust bin is 60% larger and more efficiently sealed than it previously was. The Roomba 880’s multi-pass “Persistent Cleaning” technology is as effective as it was on the 600/700 series, which means you’re getting the smartest, most thorough cleaning robot sold today.

One thing to note is that the Roomba 880 is not any quieter than the previous models. iRobot’s team noted that the changes to the design of the new robot means there should be a noise reduction, especially on carpet, but I didn’t notice any. I would have thought that the brushless design would have meant a quieter robot, but that was not the case in my side-by-side testing on hardwood and tile. What’s interesting about the Roomba 800 series is that while it’s a much better vacuum than the previous models, it’s not a better robot. iRobot’s engineers revamped the cleaning tools, but were happy enough with the robot’s sensor system, navigation algorithm, and other tools that the Roomba was basically unchanged on the technology side. Apparently battery management is improved with the 800 series (I didn’t notice any difference) and the 880 has inherited the 700 series’ direct remote control navigation and full bin indicator, but there is nothing new from a technology standpoint.

If you view the Roomba as a robot first and vacuum second, then you’ll be disappointed by lack of advancement. If you view the Roomba was a vacuum first and a robot second, then the upgrade is pretty incredible. At $700 the Roomba 880 is at the very top of iRobot’s vacuum lineup. The Roomba 790 sold for the same price as this, but was available in more reasonable packages, like the $450 Roomba 760. The Roomba 650 is the best value today at $400, which isn’t cheap but is a much easier purchase to swallow than the 880. Of course if you want the new cleaning system, you’ve got to spend the money, even if the 600 series is just as smart as the 800sIntroducing the Roomba® 980 Vacuum Cleaning Robot Roomba 980 is the best in test The Roomba 980 won the best design, battery power, vacuum power, ability to get around, ease of use and customer reviews, showing us what a true champion is.
