The Roomba robot vacuum cleaner just got a whole lot smarter. Bedford, Mass.-based iRobot (IRBT) announced late Wednesday that its next-generation Roomba features intelligent visual navigation and Internet cloud-connected app control. The Roomba 980 creates a map of its surroundings as it cleans and keeps track of its location until it has cleaned an entire level of a home. It automatically returns to its home base to recharge and, after powering up, resumes cleaning where it left off. The robot can clean carpets and hard floors for up to two hours between charges. Roomba 980 cleans efficiently in open areas by moving in parallel lines and, thanks to its suite of sensors, can adapt its pattern when necessary, such as navigating under furniture and around clutter. With a new smartphone app, called iRobot Home, users can control their Roomba 980 from anywhere at any time. The robot has built-in Wi-Fi to connect to wireless home networks. IRobot has developed versions of the Home app for Apple (AAPL) iOS and Google (GOOGL) Android devices.

In addition to intelligent navigation and remote control, the Roomba 980 boasts improved cleaning performance. The robot is smart enough to detect different floor surfaces and optimize its cleaning power based on the type of floor it's cleaning.
