5 Best Leaf Blowers and Garden Vacs 2016 full Karcher S650 review January 19, 2015, 11:00 pm Excellent article - thanks.A bit of the shame that you haven't really covered any petrol powered models. They offer true mobility, can be used in wet/damp conditions and don't need to be re-charged every time. Most importantly, the power is in a totally different league to the electric/battery versions.Interesting read anyway .... November 15, 2015, 9:06 am Very useful article, thank you))Espesially it's helpful for beggining gardeners. Falling autumn leaves can be a beautiful symbol of the changing seasons. Beautiful, that is, until you have to clear them out of the garden.

There is no shortage of rakes and hand tools at your disposal, and the effort can make for excellent exercise. But in some situations, sweeping and raking is a huge chore. Luckily, however large or small your plot, there is a piece of equipment to make the job easier. Machines have been unpopular because of the noise, but it is getting easier to find quieter models. Barrington Court in Somerset has acres of gardens, and tons of autumn leaves fall on its grounds each year. It’s a massive job for the team to keep paths, lawns and borders clear and tidy. “We use rakes a lot of the time,” says head gardener Christine Brain, “especially in the formal gardens, but we also rely on a range of garden machinery around the rest of the site.” A powerful machine will make short work of clearing fallen leaves. Blow them into one place and collect them up into bags where they will rot down into leaf mould. Some garden blowers have a vacuum option with collector bag and will also shred the clippings.

This is a good choice if you are composting or looking for faster leaf breakdown (a bigger surface area for microbes to work on means faster decay). Or just buy a blower and collect the resulting pile by hand. We took a range of garden blowers and vacuums to Barrington Court and asked the gardens team to test them on lawns, hard surfaces and around the gardens. The results were unanimous. Likes Surprisingly powerful for a battery-powered machine. It is easy to use – pick it up and off you go. Great design and nice action; you just swing it from side to side. The wide, curved leaf nozzle (optional extra) was popular and effective. It’s quiet to use. The charge indicator on the battery is useful. This is a versatile piece of kit with an infinitely variable control switch. Dislikes It’s a bit pricey (but you get what you pay for) and on the heavy side (4.9kg with battery). What you get Cordless leaf blower, one of eight garden tools where one battery fits all; price does not include £175 for highest capacity clip-in battery that fits other cordless Stihl tools, plus £65 for quick charger and £9.30 for curved leaf nozzle;

Quiet Mark 2014 accreditation; simple one-handed, infinitely variable control creates 46m/s airspeed (165kph). Runs for 13-23 minutes on continuous use (01276 417610; Likes Gives a clean sweep on lawns, paths and hard surfaces. It’s big and powerful, and sweeps up everything in its path, leaving a neat, clean finish. Ideal for large areas, it does a tremendous job. Dislikes It’s quite slow and noisy, and leaves wheel marks on the lawn. Slightly fiddly to remove and replace the collection bag, but you get the hang of it. It would be better if the collection nozzle was wider than the wheels so you could vacuum under plants without running them over. What you get A 5.5hp/190cc Subaru engine self-propelled vacuum; (£799 for push version); 170-litre zipperless bag (01844 278800; Likes Light (2.8kg) and well-balanced. Surprisingly powerful for its weight and size. Ideal for a small garden. Works well on hard surfaces. User friendly, easy to store. No cables and no petrol to worry about.

Dislikes The blower nozzle appears to have a design fault. The locating catch didn’t engage well in our tests, though this didn’t affect the performance of the machine. It’s a bit pricey if you don’t have other machines that fit this battery. What you get Cordless leaf blower with battery and charger (£109.99 without). The battery fits other Bosch products, including cordless Rotak lawnmowers. The 36-volt lithium-ion battery produces 180-260kph air speed; easy to adjust, one-handed speed control (0344 736 0109; Likes A great engine at an affordable price. It’s a blower and a vacuum; you just open or close the motor/fan cover, change a nozzle and simply add or remove the collection bag. It chops the leaves. Very powerful, especially the blower (55m/s 198kph), which worked well on hard surfaces. Dislikes Noisy and vibrates a lot. Some users were unable to handle it for more than a few minutes. The plastic casing appears to be flimsy. The on-off switch is small, fiddly to use and hard to see during use.

In blower mode, it grabs your trousers. On vacuum mode, it tends to suck the collecting nozzle to the ground. What you get Powerful 25.4cc Kawasaki petrol (two-stroke) engine; detachable tube and 70-litre zipped collection bag; mulching blade to reduce the waste (01963 828000; Easy to convert from blow to vac via a simple switch. Not as heavy as it looks (4.3kg without the cable). There is a more powerful Jet Vac mode which can shift stuck-down leaves and a shredding line that cuts up the debris. Sticks and bigger items, such as cones, are collected whole. It does everything you need it to. Powerful blower and good vac, it takes some beating. Dislikes Looks and feels a bit flimsy. Doesn’t stand up when not in use and is large to store. The cable restricts use. What you get Versatile 4-in-1 Blow ’n’ Vac with Jet Vac for wet leaves; 2,700w electric motor creating a 212kph blower speed; 12m cable (01325 302302; Likes This swaps blower/vac modes easily via a switch.

It has a nozzle with a wheel for transport. Easy to start with a simple-to-use on/off switch. It shreds the leaves before collecting them in the bag. Powerful in blower mode. Dislikes This is heavy (7kg), noisy and vibrates when in use. It wasn’t great on vacuum mode and could do with a wider nozzle on the vacuum tube. It doesn’t stand up well when you are not using it, which makes refuelling a challenge. The shoulder strap turned out to be too short for most users. What you get 3-in-1, vacuum, blower and shredder; 25cc two-stroke engine with 165kph air speed and a 40-litre collection bag; reduces leaves by 10:1; weight 7kg (available from Mow Direct). Likes A generous collection bag. Infinitely variable control, easy and light to use. Fairly easy to convert from blower to vacuum, but you do need to change the tubes and connect or disconnect the bag. Good value for money. Dislikes It is not recommended that you collect twigs and hard debris with this machine, only soft material and leaves.
