Instead of spending money on a repair service (or a new vacuum), you can fix it yourself for less than $5. If your vacuum suddenly sounds different and no longer picks up things it should, take a peek underneath while it’s on and see if the brush roller is spinning. If it’s not, then you likely have a broken roller belt. You may even be able to see a broken belt flopping around if you look close enough.Once you’ve confirmed the belt is broken, replacing it is much easier than you think. Jot down your vacuum manufacturer and model number and search for it plus “vacuum belt” on Amazon. For less than $5 you can usually find a replacement belt for most major manufacturers like Hoover, Oreck, Eureka, Bissell, and Dirt Devil. If Amazon doesn’t have your belt, then go direct to a manufacturer’s website and search for replacement parts.

If the manufacturer doesn’t sell direct, they will tell you where to buy it. To install the new belt, remove the bottom plate on your vacuum. There will be 4 to 8 screws holding the plate on and possibly another plate that holds the roller brush in. Pull the brush out and take the time to clean it and remove all hair and string. Pull out the old belt and install the new belt by first wrapping it around the spindle that is attached to the motor and then work it back around the roller brush end. Both types use the same belt drive from the motor to the brush, and the belts are changed in the same way. There are two ways to change the belt. One allows you to quickly install a new belt, while the other way also allows you access to the brush and suction tube mechanism for cleaning. Determine if You Need a Belt The belt comes off of the motor axle drive shaft and loops around the brush roller pulley. Power from the motor turns the belt, which spins the roller brush, also known as the beater bar. In most cases the roller brush will jam from a foreign object, and the belt will continue spinning. The heat from the friction can cause the belt to degrade and snap. In some cases the belt may actually slip off the drive shaft. Whether the belt snaps or becomes so loose that it slips off the drive shaft, it must be replaced. Side Access Cover Replacement On Oreck XL vacuum cleaners, a side access cover allows you to replace the belt without taking the vacuum cleaner apart. Remove the cover by loosening a hold-down screw with a screwdriver.

Both the drive shaft and the brush roller pulley are accessible with the cover off. Slide the new belt onto the drive shaft, then push the end loop over the pulley. Turn the brush roller three complete revolutions to seat the belt and then replace the access cover. Removing the Lower Panel You can also remove the panel beneath the vacuum power head by unscrewing five attachment screws and pulling the panel up and away. This action exposes both the roller brush and the motor drive shaft. Although a bit more time-consuming, it gives you much more space to work in, and for many people, it makes changing the belt easier than going through the side access panel. Cleaning One of the reasons that vacuum belt failure occurs is because the roller brush may have jammed. Removing the lower panel is the best way to clean the brush roller and the suction tube. Remove any foreign object that may have jammed the roller brush and cut any strings, yarn or hair that may have wound their way around the roller brush.
